This is the first Digital Intensified CCD Imaging System that can achieve a gating time (or exposure time) of 3 nanoseconds with a 1280 x 1024 CCD format. This coupled with its 12-bits of dynamic range has tremendous commercial significance. Given the short exposure time and light intensification capability, researchers can now study events that are extremely short in duration and that exhibit both low light or high light level characteristics. Since this system is intensified, you can amplify your low light levels, and with 12-bits of dynamic range you will avoid saturation from higher light levels.
